Almost two years after he was first charged with faking his own kidnapping, a Trinidadian national has been found guilty and sentenced to four years in jail.

He was also sentenced 18 months in jail for providing false information.

The 35-year-old man, Sawak Maraj was whisked off to jail today after the verdict and sentence were handed down by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

It was back in October 2017 that Maraj arrived in Guyana and had a call made to his parents back in Trinidad claiming that he was kidnapped and a ransom needed to be paid for his release.

The parents became concerned and immediately contacted the Guyana Police Force.

With moments, The Guyana Police Force activated its Major Crimes Unit and was able to track down the location of the phone that was used to make the ransom call.

The Agents rushed to a resort just outside of Georgetown and were left confused when they broke into the room where the man was allegedly being held captive and found him in a relaxed mood, watching cable television and sipping juice.

He was immediately taken into custody and according to the Police, the investigations revealed that two other Trinidadian men were part of a scheme, along with the man, to get money from his parents back in Trinidad.

The two men reportedly arrived in Guyana two days before the “kidnapping” and were seen on airport surveillance video, greeting Maraj when he arrived.

The three were also caught on camera at a Georgetown Hotel making bookings, before leaving for the resort, where he was eventually found alive and well.

He was first refused bail but was later granted bail in a substantial sum and allowed to leave the country.

He returned for the completion of his trial, which wrapped up today with the four jail sentence.
