A Venezuelan boat operator today pleaded guilty to possession and trafficking of more than 13 pounds of marijuana.

He has been sentenced to 4 years in jail and fined just over $7 million.

The man, Ganesh Das, appeared in Court today and entered a guilty plea to the drug possession and trafficking charges. He said the economic crisis in Venezuela forced him to attempt the drug smuggling.

The marijuana was discovered during an operation by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit last week at the Nova Hotel in Georgetown.

Two other men were also held by CANU, in relation to the same crime.

But during today’s hearing, the CANU Prosecutor announced that based on the guilty plea by the main accused, it will be discontinuing the case against the other two suspects.
