The Guyana Police Force is reporting a 15% increase in murders and a massive 62% increase in rape cases across Guyana for the year so far.
According to the Police, 47 murders have been recorded for 2015 as of Monday April, 13. There were 41 murders for the same period last year.
In many of the incidents, the perpetrators remain at large and there have been at least two other reported murder cases which fall outside of the reporting period. City businessman Farouk Ghanie who owned and managed the Hamson’s Hardware Store on Regent Street, was found stabbed to death on Thursday morning.
And in a release on Thursday, the police said there has been no arrest so far in the investigations into the murder of Quincy Bowman, 31 years, of Cummings Lodge whose body was found with a gunshot injury to the head in the vicinity of Busta Bridge, Festival City, on April 06.
Several villagers have been questioned.
Investigations are also continuing into the circumstances surrounding the death of 17-year-old Devi Ramadhar, of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara. Her body was found on the seashore at La Jalousie, on April 11.
The cause of her death is so far undetermined. However, two men were arrested and questioned by the police and later released on bail.
The Police statement said ballistics tests are being conducted on the spent shells and a warhead that were recovered as investigations into the murder of 45-year-old businesswoman Shevon Gordon of Block 22, Wismar, Linden.
Gordon was shot and killed during an armed robbery at her home on April 04.
So far the two suspects in this robbery/murder have managed to evade capture by the police.
Meanwhile, serious crimes continue to spiral out of control with police statistics indicating a 4% increase for this year unto April 13, in comparison to the same period in 2014.
For the period monitored robbery under arms decreased by 19%.
The statistics indicate a 27% decrease in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms, and a 3% decrease in armed robbery where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators.
