One day after the Minister of Health said he suspects that the faster-spreading Omnicron variant of COVID-19 was present in Guyana, the country has recorded a total of 485 new cases within 24 hours.
The number of new cases has pushed the total number of active cases in the country to more than 1800, but there are only eight persons who are hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit.
“Our active cases is now 1,824 and so that’s a big jump and its probably the highest total we have had in a day and maybe these numbers will even go further”, Dr. Anthony said.
Of the active cases in the country, 1,138 are in Region Four, 272 in Region Six, 148 in Region Three, 78 in Region Nine, 41 in Region Two, and 74 in Region Ten.
“So you can see that the cases are going up around the country and those Regions that have low cases are awaiting the results because we have collected samples but they have not been processed as yet. So we can expect that this trend will continue because with the Omicron variant, it is highly contagious and the numbers double every four days or so,” the Health Minister explained.
The Health Minister said a high number of cases were expected since persons have not been adhering to the COVID-19 guidelines. The COVID-19 Task Force has also not been doing adequate enforcement of the COVID-19 guidelines, despite their many warnings through the media.
Over the Christmas and New Year holidays, parties, sports events, and large gatherings were hosted in various parts of the country, especially here in the City. Bars have been transformed into full nightclubs with little or no adherence to the COVID-19 measures.
There are currently 64 persons hospitalized with the virus with 36 of those persons at the Ocean View facility with 8 persons in the ICU.
