63 year old man remanded for stepdaughter’s murder

The 63-year-old man fingered in the brutal stabbing death of his 14-year-old stepdaughter was remanded to prison on Monday morning when he appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs at the Vreed-en-hoop Magistrates’ Court.

The man, Fitz Josiah was not allowed to enter a plea to the indictable charge and he appeared emotionless as he stood before the magistrate.

Scores of persons flocked the courtyard and shouted “murderer” as the man was taken to the courtroom.

The mother of the teenage girl was in the courtroom and cried bitterly during the appearance. At one stage, when the Magistrate asked the accused to provide details of his personal lie, the man told the court that he was “married to the devil and have 1 child with the devil”.

Throughout his appearance, he muttered incoherently to himself. He will make his next court appearance on May 31, 2013.

The Prosecution’s case is that on April 24, 2013, the 63-year-old stabbed his stepdaughter Fenella Samuels to death at the family’s West Coast Demerara home during an argument. The young woman received over 20 stab wounds to her body.

The dead girl’s mother and young brother are expected to be called as witnesses in the case. They were both at home at the time. The mother told Police that she ran out of the house to seek help when the man began his rampage.

The elderly man reportedly escaped from the scene of the murder but was spotted by a group of youths the day after in the Vreed-en-hoop area on the West Demerara Coast. The youths effected a citizen’s arrest and he was handed over to the police.

Over the weekend, reports surfaced that this was not the first time that the man was fingered in a murder. He was linked to at least three other murders over the past 15 years but was never charged in those cases because of a lack of evidence. He was arrested and eventually released in those cases.

Back in 2001, his reputed wife at the time was found murdered with stab wounds to her neck and body. The woman’s children were always of the view that the man was responsible for their mother’s murder.

The surviving daughter of the woman who said she does not want her identity to be known as this stage,  told News Source a harrowing story of growing up and seeing the man threaten and abuse her mother. She said she was forced to leave the home and months after, her mother was murdered.

The young woman said when she read of this latest case, her mother’s unsolved murder came rushing back to her. She said she is willing to offer any evidence that may be needed in this case against the 63-year-old since she also wants justice for her mother.
