With the Claims and Objections period set to begin tomorrow, the Guyana Elections Commission has revealed that the Preliminary List of Electors will contain the names of 646, 625 persons.

That figure was pulled from the original National Register of Registrants and according to GECOM’s Public Relations Officer, Yolanda Warde, the Preliminary List of Electors that will appear from tomorrow, will not include the names of new registrants from the recently aborted house-to-house registration exercise.

She said she will be able to offer better guidance on the issue after tomorrow’s statutory meeting of the Elections Commission. Warde, however, stated that the new names from house to house registration will eventually be merged with the other data.

Last week, the Commission explained that during the claims and objections period, every person whose name appear on the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) must visit the Registration office in their respective area with their National Identification Card to verify their registration record in order to be included in the Official List of Electors (OLE).

The Opposition nominated members of the Elections Commission have indicated that they know of no decision by the Commission on the need for persons to visit the registration offices to verify their registration record.

However, the decision formed part of the gazetted order for claims and objections that was signed by the Chairman of the Elections Commission.

The People’s National Congress has been encouraging citizens who did not get registered during the house to house initiative to ensure that they get registered during claims and objections.
