In a statement on Tuesday evening, the Police Force announced that the Traffic Chief is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident which occurred about 11:30 this morning on the Vreed-en-Hoop Public Road, West Coast Demerara.

The Guyana Police Force has announced that an Assistant Superintendent of Police has been relieved of his current duties following the death of a 65-year-old woman who was hit down by a car being driven by the Senior Police Officer.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, the Police Force announced that the Traffic Chief is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident  which occurred about 11:30 this morning on the Vreed-en-Hoop Public Road, West Coast Demerara.

The Policeman who was stationed at West Demerara was driving his personal motor car, PRR 4446 when the accident occurred.

“Enquiries revealed that the car was proceeding west on the southern driveway and the pedestrian, 65 years old Anmanie Deonarine of Vreed-en-Hoop, W.C.D was walking east along the said southern side of the road, when it was alleged that the car veered further south and struck down the pedestrian who was picked up and rush to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where she succumbed whilst receiving treatment”, the Police statement said.

According to the Police, a breathalyzer test was conducted on the Officer by the Traffic Chief himself but no trace of blood alcohol was recorded.

It is believed that the Officer may have been speeding at the time.  This latest road death has increased the number of road fatalities on the country’s roadways for the year to 103.
