8 new COVID-19 Cases as Guyanese express less fear of deadly virus

The Ministry of Public Health today revealed that there are eight new COVID-19 cases in Guyana.

The new cases were recorded from a total of 49 tests that were completed in the past 24 hours.  The Ministry did not indicate the areas where the eight persons were tested positive for the virus.

Region One remains the epicentre of the Coronavirus cases in Guyana with more than half of the current active cases.

Public Health Officials have been expressing their worry over the growing numbers in Guyana.

Last week, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer revealed that a recent survery has found that most Guyanese are no longer worried about the coronavirus.

“Fear moved from 82 % to 54% indicating that there may be fatigue when it comes to the public’s response to the messages concerning COVID 19. It is important that you understand that despite the 6 % death rate that there is no prediction as to who will have a fatal case or a mild one and therefore it is in your best interest to prevent infection in the first place. 30 % of you are unwilling to give up your freedoms in order to adhere to the guidelines that could save your life”, the survey revealed.

Dr. Boyle said citizens need to be reminded that prevention is still better than cure even if they are becoming tired of the constant messaging about the coronavirus.

For the past month, Guyana has recorded more new cases of the coronavirus with the majority of those cases in the Region One and Seven communities.
