An unoccupied building at the GDF’s Second Infantry Battalion Base at Maria Lodge on the Essequibo Coast was badly damaged by fire just after 3 o’ clock this morning.

A police report said the building had no electricity supply. Therefore, the fire being of an electrical origin has been ruled out.

Quick thinking neighbours who noticed smoke at the top flat of the building raised an alarm and started a bucket brigade. They were able to bring the fire under control before the Fire Service arrived at the scene.

A Police report said the floor of the building was partially burnt along with the walls located on the northern and southern side.

An investigation is underway.
