The number of active Coronavirus cases in Guyana continues to surge with another 240 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

The new cases have pushed the number of active cases to over 2700 according to the Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony. It is the second day in a row that the country has recorded more than 200 new cases of the virus.

“If people are not taking the precautions, we will continue to see this go up even further”, the Health Minister said.

According to the Minister of Health, there are a number of current hotspots in the country that continue to see a significant number of new and active cases of COVID-19. Those areas include Tuschen in Region 3, Diamond and Grove on the East Bank of Demerara, Kitty and Sophia in Georgetown and Mon Repos on the East Coast of Demerara.

The Region Seven town of Bartica is also seeing another spike in new cases, according to the Minister of Health.

“In every single region, we have active cases so people must take those precautions. And we are encouraging people to get vaccinated because vaccination will help to reduce your chances of going into the hospital with a severe form of COVID”, the Health Minister said.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister has also expressed concern that there are a number of persons who were administered with a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and are still to return for their second dose to complete their vaccination.

He said there are about 30,000 people who need to return for their 2nd dose of AstraZeneca so that they could be fully vaccinated against the virus.

Being partially vaccinated, he said, could still lead someone to become severely ill with the virus since there is not full protection.
