Additional misconduct in public office charge filed against Trevor Benn

Former Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, Trevor Benn was back at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today where he was charged with an additional count of misconduct in public office.

The new charge is related to the sale of land on Mandela Avenue and Aubrey Barker Road, South, Ruimveldt by the Lands and Surveys Commission while Benn headed the body.

Mr. Benn is accused of selling the land below market value.

In brief comments after his court appearance, Benn explained that the land was sold for $30.5m, but that cost was given after an evaluation was done by the Chief Evaluation Officer.

He is contending that the charges which continue to be laid against him are trumped up and amount to harassment.

“In fact, this morning we came here and the officer from CID did not have a statement in the file. They were not ready for the case and yet they brought me here this morning”, Mr. Benn said.

The former Lands Commissioner said he is not surprised that he continues to face charges for carrying out his duties.

“It continues to be my view that as a black man, successful Commissioner of Lands and Surveys, the first Lands Commissioner to successfully turn the body around is being vilified. That is all I can say, the Attorney General is on television trying this case and whatever case he plans to bring to me and before him, it was the Vice-President, they were on television constantly abusing me and they were signaling exactly what they are going to do to me”, Benn stated.

He said he is prepared to challenge any and all allegations which will likely continue to be made against him, pointing out that he is not fearful of the attempts to discredit his character.

Benn is confident that he will be vindicated.

Last month, another misconduct in public office charge was filed against the former Lands Commissioner over the leasing of land to an engineering company.
