AFC begins search for Gaskin’s replacement in Parliament

Although the Court of Appeal invalidated the no-confidence motion, it did agree with the High Court that persons who would have pledged allegiance to a foreign power cannot sit as Members of Parliament in keeping with Guyana's Constitution.

AFC begins search for Gaskin’s replacement in Parliament

The Alliance For Change, which is part of the coalition government, has started the search for a new Member of Parliament, who will take up the seat being vacated by AFC treasurer and Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin.

The AFC has also indicated that it would like to see changes in the Constitution that would allow Guyanese who hold dual citizenship to be able to serve as Members of Parliament.

Mr. Gaskin is one of four Government Ministers who have tendered their resignation because they hold dual citizenship and therefore cannot sit as Members of Parliament.

While the other three Ministers, who are APNU members, have indicated that they will renounce their citizenship, Gaskin was born in the United Kingdom.

AFC Leader Raphael Trotman today announced that a number of persons who are AFC members and are on the coalition’s top up candidate’s list are being looked at to take up the MP position.

He said a number of qualities will be examined including loyalty and availability. It was the AFC’s Charrandass Persaud, who voted along with the Opposition to move a no-confidence motion against the Government.

He left the country the next morning and is now living in Canada where he has citizenship.

Although the Court of Appeal invalidated the no-confidence motion, it did agree with the High Court that persons who would have pledged allegiance to a foreign power cannot sit as Members of Parliament in keeping with Guyana’s Constitution.
