AFC National Congress and Elections set for January

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo today announced that the Alliance For Change (AFC) will be hosting its National Congress in January 2017.

It will mark the first national congress for the party since it took the reigns of political power in Guyana as part of the coalition government.

The Prime Minister is the party’s acting Chairman.

The Congress is slated to be historic and will mark the first time that it will be held outside of Region 4.

This year’s congress will take place in Region 3.

Party leadership positions will be contested at the Congress and those include positions for Party Leader, Chairman, Vice-Chairman, General Secretary and Treasurer.

The current Leader of the AFC is Khemraj Ramjattan who serves as Minister of Public Security and Vice President in the current government. He is also one of the founding members of the party.

It is unclear whether he will be challenged for the position but many young party members have been whispering the name of Cathy Hughes for Party Leader.

Hughes is the current Minister of Public Telecommunications and has commanded respect and praise from a wide cross section of the Guyanese society since taking office as a government minister.

She is also well liked by party insiders and persons outside of the party. Some party members believe she would do well as a Leader of the party who could begin chartering a stronger course for the AFC as it continues on in the coalition.

Prime Minister Nagamootoo’s name is also being tossed around as a possible party leader.

During today’s press conference, the Prime Minister also affirmed the AFC’s support of the government’s fight against crime and noted particularly the Joint Services raid on the prisons at Camp Street and New Amsterdam. He lauded the Joint Services for preventing a certain threat against Guyanese and urged the Ministry of Public Security to intensify its fight against the criminal elements of Guyana.
