AFC rejects Nigel Hughes resignation as Chairman

The Alliance for Change has rejected the resignation of its Chairman Nigel Hughes. Attorney Nigel Hughes tendered his resignation on Tuesday to the opposition party after it was revealed that he is the Company Secretary for Amaila Hydro Incorporated which is the company set up to overlook the Amaila Falls hydro power project.

The project is currently centre stage of the debate in National Assembly. The Opposition parties including the AFC had earlier voted down funding for the project calling for more answers to critical questions.

In a statement announcing his resignation following the Kaieteur News revelations,  Hughes said his involvement with the company was public record and he played no part in discussions at the party level about the project.

“The party wishes to assure its members and supporters both here in Guyana and overseas and all Guyanese that it employed best practice at all times with regard to the formulation of decisions and the position of the party with regard to AFHI and indeed the Party thanks Mr. Hughes for his timely and forthright declaration of interest. This allowed the Party to act responsibly and judiciously to avoid any potential conflicts”, the party statement noted.

The AFC said it continues “to repose every confidence in Mr. Hughes in executing the duties of Chairman of the party, a role in which he has acted with the utmost professionalism”.

The latest controversy surrounding the project came on the same day that the Leader of the AFC Khemraj Ramjattan appeared to be softening the party’s position on the project explaining their willingness to now offer support.
