Guyana’s Attorney General Anil Nandlall on Monday accused the opposition of employing delay tactics with the committee examining the amendments to the anti money laundering legislation.
At a Monday morning press conference at the Headquarters of the People’s Progressive Party, the Attorney General announced that Guyana now has until August to put legislation in place on money laundering to avoid sanctions. He said the special select committee has been meeting to examine the amendments but in his opinion, the committee could be interviewing more than just one person per day.
“There is a deliberate attempt to dilate and detain the work of the committee but with this new deadline, I hope that the opposition could be persuaded and that there are other issues that one can play politics with”, the Attorney General said.
He also told the news conference that the issue of money laundering is not one that should form part of political games. The Opposition parties have made clear their position on the issue.
The Alliance For Change has said it will not support the amendments until the President begins to assent to opposition piloted bills that were passed by the National Assembly. A Partnership for National Unity has indicated that it needed more time to study the amendments.
The Guyana Government has come under criticism for not having proper money laundering legislation in place that could effective prosecute persons believed to be involved in money laundering.
