Project Manager of the troubled E – Governance Project Alexie Ramotar has been sent on administrative leave by the new APNU+AFC government.
The move is to facilitate an investigation which is to be conducted into the financial arrangements of the controversial and widely debated Project.
Ramotar, who is the son of former President Donald Ramotar, was asked to remove himself from the operations of the project, with immediate effect, by Minister of State Joseph Harmon.
Minister Harmon said this recent move is to ensure proper facilitation of these investigations.
Earlier this month Harmon and a team visited the project. He had then directed Government’s Adviser on E-Governance Floyd Levi, to “work closely” with Ramotar and the E-Government project.
When the coalition government took office in May, Harmon said that the government would review the functionality of the project as part of a wider review of developmental projects birthed under the former People’s Progressive Party/Civic Administration.
Harmon had told reporters that the project was eating up public funds.
The project, on which construction began four years ago, was largely critiqued by the present administration while in opposition. They had expressed little confidence in Ramotar’s ability to head the project.
The project was halted in December last, reportedly due to technical setbacks in installation of the cable to transmit bandwidth from Brazil to Georgetown.
But inspections of the project revealed that the cables were badly laid and were not properly protected.
Millions of dollars may have already been wasted.
