All Coalition partners asked to submit nominees for GECOM Commissioner spot

President David Granger has written to all of the parties that make up the coalition government, and not just the Alliance For Change, asking them to each submit a nominee for the position of Commissioner for the Guyana Elections Commission.

The need for the position to be filled is as a result of the passing of Commissioner, Sandra Jones.

The Alliance For Change on Tuesday confirmed that it had been asked to submit a nominee. News Source understands that the AFC submitted two nominees.

Today, Minister of State, Joe Harmon told News Source that all of the parties in the coalition were asked to submit nominees of their own.

The President will be expected to pick one of the nominees and put the person forward as his own nominee for the position.

The Constitution of Guyana allows for six commissioners to be appointed to the Guyana Elections Commission. Three of those Commissioners would be from the President’s own judgement while the other three would be on the advice of the Opposition Leader.

Back in 2012 when Robert Williams passed away, the AFC pressed the then Opposition Leader, to put forward one of its nominees for the post. However, that idea was shot down and Opposition Leader at the time, now President, David Granger nominated Sandra Jones for the job. She was appointed just after.

With the AFC now in a coalition government with the APNU, it is hoping that its nominee will land the job. But the six parties that make up the APNU, will all be expected to submit nominees for the post also.
