Allow Government of Guyana to Resolve issues…I am not in breach of Constitution -says Pres. Granger

"I am not in breach of the Constitution and as far as I am concerned, in Guyana, the Government of Guyana has been complying with the Constitution and I have said what I have said about receipt of advice from the Chairman of the Commission. It is impossible for the executive to run the elections", President Granger said.

Allow Government of Guyana to Resolve issues…I am not in breach of Constitution -says Pres. Granger

In a response to a joint statement from the US, UK and EU missions in Guyana, President David Granger this afternoon declared that his government is not in breach of the Constitution and the Foreign Missions need to allow the Government of Guyana to resolve the political issues.

The foreign diplomats in their statement said with elections not being held by September 18, 2019, the Government has found itself in breach of the Constitution.

But speaking to reporters at the Pegasus hotel, President David Granger said “it would be a more grievous breach of the Constitution if I tried to intrude in the work of the (Elections) Commission, so I’ll advise the foreign delegations or foreign missions to allow the Government of Guyana to resolve the issues. I have heard from the Chairman of the Commission and I have very prudent, that the Chairman, a very prudent and sober retired Judge, will recommend to me a date which the Guyanese people are prepared to accept, but I cannot hold elections until I receive advice that the Commission is ready”.

President Granger said he is sure that the Chairman and the Commission will give him advice that will see credible elections with a credible list.

The Elections Commission Chairman has informed the President that GECOM will be ready to host elections by the end of February 2020.

Today, the President was adamant that he has not been in breach of the Constitution.

“I am not in breach of the Constitution and as far as I am concerned, in Guyana, the Government of Guyana has been complying with the Constitution and I have said what I have said about receipt of advice from the Chairman of the Commission. It is impossible for the executive to run the elections”, President Granger said.
