Another attempt to smuggle contraband into Lusignan Prison disrupted

It appears as though every weekend, there will be an effort to smuggle items into the prisons across the country.

The Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels reported this morning that an unknown person was spotted during the wee hours of this morning near the fence of the holding area at the facility.

After an alarm was raised the man managed to escape but left his bags behind. In those bags, prison officers found over 1000 grams of marijuana, sim cards, phone charge, packets of cigarettes and an earpiece.  A camouflage hat and pants were also found.

Investigators believe the man was attempting to throw the items over the prison fence when he was spotted.  This is the second time in less than a month that someone was spotted attempting to throw items into the jail yard and managed to escape.

An investigation has been launched.

Just last week, Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan said he is wary of the many efforts by prisoners to get illegal items smuggled into the prisons.

He said he is even more wary of the involvement of prison officers in many of those attempts.

Mr. Ramjattan said when one sees the involvement of prison officers in the smuggling of contraband items into the prisons, it points to the quality of some officers in the system.

He said the Prison Service, which is expected to begin a recruitment drive soon, will have to look for and ensure it gets officers of a higher quality in the system.
