Ansa McAl donates doses of Remdesevir to Ministry of Health

The Ansa McAl company in Guyana today donated 100 doses of the Remdesevir drug to the Ministry of Health. The drug is used for the treatment of seriously ill Coronavirus patients.

Chief Executive Officer of Ansa McAl Guyana, Troy Cadogan noted that the company was able to procure the drug through its suppliers and wanted to play its role in assisting the Ministry of Health in its efforts to fight the disease in Guyana.

Cadogan explained that “Remdesivir (GS-5734), a nucleoside analogue prodrug, has inhibitory effects on pathogenic animal and human coronaviruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in vitro, and inhibits Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV-1, and SARS-CoV-2 replication in animal models. Early clinical studies have shown clinically meaningful differences and reductions in some clinical parameters in patients. The donation of this drug will provide a powerful tool in the government’s arsenal to help in their fight against some of the debilitating symptoms of COVID-19, that can occur in some cases”.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, said the Ministry of Health is grateful for the donation. He said Remdesevir remains significant in the fight against COVID-19 mainly with those persons who are in the Intensive Care Unit.

“We want to say how grateful we are to you and your company for this donation. As you rightfully said we have been using Remdesivir as part of our treatment protocol and especially for those patients who are in our ICU and this has become one of the important components, now while I know that you said that it’s expensive the challenge that we have is that some time for one patient, we have to use ten, for the course of treatment, it is timely and I’m sure it’s going to help some of the outpatients”.

Dr. Anthony added that if there is going to be a real fight against COVID-19, there is the need for a multi-sectoral approach and collaboration with other players in the society.

Ansa McAl Trading is one of the largest suppliers of pharmaceutical and other drugs and medications in Guyana.
