APNU and PPP hold on to bases while AFC gets left behind

The Guyana Elections Commission has started to release preliminary results for yesterday’s Local Government Elections. More of the results are to be released this morning.

Some of those preliminary results show the two main parties, the APNU and the PPP maintaining and strengthening their hold in many of their traditional bases, while the Alliance For Change appears to have been left behind.

The AFC which is part of the coalition government, decided to go it alone for the local government elections and may have been left alone by voters.

For the townships, the APNU will maintain control in Georgetown, Linden, Bartica and New Amsterdam. The PPP is likely to win the townships of Lethem, Mabaruma, Rose Hall and Anna Regina.   Results from the other townships have been trickling in.

Results show the APNU picking up 14 of the 15 constituent seats in Georgetown and all 8 of the constituent seats in Linden. However, the Alliance For Change might possibly be able to squeeze into the two councils through the proportional representation system.

The map for the Neighbourhood Democractic Councils is wide and today a clearer picture of the performance of the parties in those NDCs will better known.

Yesterday’s elections saw a low voter turnout. Many of the political parties have said the voter turn out was lower than expected.

The Guyana Elections Commission has indicted that the process went smoothly across the country on Monday except for a few minor issues, that were immediately addressed by the Commission.

All of the preliminary results will be made known today and the final results could come by late this evening or early on Wednesday, if there are no requests for recounts.
