APNU loses ground in three Georgetown Constituencies, but holds overall majority

Three popular APNU Candidates lost their race for the Georgetown City Council on Monday, but the governing party will still hold a wide majority in the Council.

The candidates, Astell Collins, Andrea Marks and Shondell Hope all lost their constituency race to PPP candidates.

Collins who was busy on election day assisting a few elderly persons to the polls, competed in Constituency 3, which covers Bel Air Gardens, Bel Air Springs, Prashad Nagar, North East & North West Campbellville.

Marks, who is a longtime PNC and APNU activist lost her seat on the Council for Constituency 6. That constituency covers Lamaha Gardens, Newtown Campbellville, Section K Campbellville and Bel Air Park.

And hope was not enough for another longtime party activist, Shondell Hope, who failed in her bid to win a seat on the Council for the Kitty North, Central and South Subryanville areas.

Senior sources close to the party told News Source that senior party functionaries are disappointed with the results in those three constituencies. However, political analysts have pointed out that the same three constituencies were narrowly won by the APNU+AFC coalition two years ago.

The losses in the three constituencies could see the PPP picking up at least five seats on the 30-seat Georgetown City Council.  After the last local government elections, it only had two seats and both were through proportional representation.

The voter turnout across Georgetown was extremely low and political watchers believe that the APNU might have failed to rally enough of its members out to cast their ballots.
