The APNU+AFC Coalition has issued a call for the Guyana Elections Commission to put itself in a state of readiness to begin a house to house registration process that would ensure a clean and credible voters list.

During the coalition’s weekly press conference today, Executive Member Aubrey Norton said with the election petition cases moving forward, GECOM must start preparations for a new voters list.

“A bloated, corrupt and compromised Voters List is at the heart of the electoral fraud which was perpetrated by the PPP during the March 2nd General and Regional Elections resulting in an illegitimate government being imposed on the people of Guyana. We are confident that the Elections Petitions will be successful and that Guyana will return to elections soon”, Norton said.

He noted that it will be imperative for a new and clean voters list to be used for the next time elections are held in Guyana. Mr. Norton said the government must ensure funds are made available to assist the Elections Commission in its efforts to clean the voter’s list.

“When elections are next held in Guyana, When elections are next held in Guyana it is absolutely imperative that it be held with a new, clean and credible voters list which is based on House-to-House registration. We call on the PPP regime to ensure that there are budgetary allocations for GECOM to allow for House-to-House registration to be conducted in 2021 without any hindrance or delay”

In the run up to the last elections, the Guyana Elections Commission aborted its house to house registration exercise as it moved into full election mode. Funds were already allocated for the house to house registration.

The APNU+AFC which was in government at the time was pushing for the registration exercise to be completed so that a new and clean list could be produced. It was the GECOM Chair who brought the registration process to an early end even as many members of the Commission openly admitted that there were issues with the list that was compiled for the elections.
