APNU+AFC Demands tax-free bonus for all public servants

The Opposition APNU+AFC has called on the government to pay all public servants an end of year bonus and it should be more than the two-week salary equivalent bonus that has been announced by the government for health workers.

In a statement today, APNU+AFC Executive Aubrey Norton said the year has been a challenging one for workers in the public sector, especially those in the frontline fight against the pandemic.

Norton said the coalition believes much more could be done for the workers.

“Cognizant of the difficult and challenging year that 2020 has been for all Guyanese, particularly for health care workers, public servants and members of the joint services, the APNU+AFC Coalition demands that all public servants (including health care workers) and members of the joint services receive one month’s tax-free compassionate payment (in addition to their December salary and that all health care workers receive an additional $100,000 BONUS above and beyond the one-month tax-free compassionate payment as outlined in 1 above and their December salary.”

The opposition said it is sure the government could find the money to pay the public servants what they deserve.

“If the PPP regime can find billions of dollars to purchase luxury vehicles for themselves and tractors for a failing sugar industry then certainly it can find money for our workers, many of whom are experiencing difficult circumstances. The APNU+AFC Coalition has a proud record of consistently paying significant end-of-year bonuses and generous salary increases to public servants and members of the joint services during our term in government”

The Government for its part has already announced it will bring back the end of year one month salary bonus for members of the joint services. It has made no mention of other categories of public servants.
