Thirty-two year old Guyana Defence Force Officer, Lieutenant Ronald Gonsalves is being remembered by friends and relatives as a respectful and easy going young man who was committed to his family and job.
Gonsalves died on Friday when the vehicle he was travelling in with two other soldiers, crashed into a power pole on Mandela Avenue. Reports indicate that he died from internal injuries.
The two injured soldiers have been identified as John Flores and Antonio Eastman. Both live in Georgetown and are now patients at the Georgetown Hospital nursing injuries.
Lt. Gonsalves is from the town of Linden and attended the Government Technical Institute and the University of Guyana before he enrolled in the Guyana Defence Force and completed the Standard Officers’ Course.
He was also a former student of Mackenzie High School in Linden.
His colleagues in the Guyana Defence Force said they have lost a “good squaddie and soldier” who loved his job and was very committed to it. His other friends said he was always easy going and would find a way to bring about laughter in a room. He was the son of well known trade unionist, Leslie Gonsalves. And he has left to mourn a wife and two young children.
Police investigators are probing the accident. There are reports that the Friday morning accident occurred as the driver of the car Gonsalves was in, pulled aside to avoid slamming into another car, lost control and slammed into the power pole just outside the Rubis service station on Mandela Avenue.
A full probe has been promised.
