Army Special Ops rank dies after being hit down by drunk driver

The Guyana Defence Force has been plunged into mourning following the death of a young Lance Corporal.

29-year-old GDF Lance Corporal, Marvin Dodson of the Special Operations Unit, died earlier today at the Georgetown Hospital as doctors battled to save his life.

He was rushed to the hospital after being hit down by a drunken driver early this morning outside a nightclub at Pouderoyen on the West Bank of Demerara.

The driver has been identified as a mini-bus operator, who was speeding along the main roadway when he lost control and slammed into the off-duty soldier.

The soldier’s body was reportedly dragged for several feet and the driver attempted to escape but was cornered and assaulted by several persons, as the soldier was rushed to hospital.

The driver was handed over to Police and a breathalyzer test was administered. That test revealed that his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.  He remains in custody.

Lance Corporal Dodson never regained consciousness and died a few hours after being taken to the hospital.
