Multiple sources close to the Guyana Fire Service and in the Police Force have indicated that preliminary investigations into the fire at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary which gutted the Office of Professional Responsibility was electrical and there is nothing to suggest that it was deliberately set.

As the Guyana Fire Service reported earlier, the fire started in a section of the building that was used as a living quarters for Police Officers.

Sources close to the investigations indicated that based on the preliminary findings, it appears as though the fire may have been caused by an electrical problem that might have existed in the building and which affected the electrical power boxes.

During the investigations, more than a dozen police ranks who were housed in the section of the building where the fire started were questioned.

News Source understands that there were concerns about electrical overloading in the building which were previously expressed.

The wooden building was several decades old and while there were repair works done to it over the years, those works might not have included electrical works, News Source was told.

The Guyana Fire Service is still to officially release the findings of its investigations. News Source understands that the findings have been shared with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police Force.

At the scene of the fire two Saturdays ago, the Minister of Home Affairs sought to lay blame for the blaze at the feet of political activists abroad who he believes have been using their platform to ignite tension in Guyana.

The Minister’s position was backed up by the Private Sector Commission, while not being privy to the investigations also sought to lay blame for the fire at the feet of political activists.

The fire at Eve Leary was the second major fire at a police complex in the city. Back in October, a fire at the Brickdam station destroyed more than 80% of that complex.

A disgruntled prisoner with no political connections has been charged for setting that blaze. The man has denied the accusations.
