The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has announced that it is in the final stages of granting approval for Aruba Airlines to begin schedule service to Guyana. The airline is set to begin service as early as July.

The carrier is likely to begin with at least five flights per week between Guyana and Aruba. Some of its flights will fly on to Curacao, Cuba and Miami.

The airline has been eyeing the Cuban market as hundreds of Cubans flock Guyana every week to shop and conduct trade.

According to the Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority, Egbert Field, “Cubans are spending close to US$500,000 a week in Guyana’s economy and that is a sizeable amount. Imagine the increase when you have additional airlines flying the same route bringing passengers out of Havana…I cannot forecast that the traveling cost will decrease but increased competition brings the prices down and this is one of the things we’re working on.”

Mr. Field  has also indicated that a number of other airlines have also applied to begin service to the Guyana market and those applications are also being looked at.

Aruba Airlines was founded in 2006, but became operational in 2013.
