With the Guyana Police Force still to take action on the allegations of racist statements being hurled at one of its Constables, the Attorney accused of making the racist statement found himself before the Chief Magistrate this morning facing a private criminal charge in relation to the incident.

The charge was filed by the Constable’s Attorney Eusi Anderson.

Attorney Nirvan Singh, who is the son of retired Chief Justice Carl Singh, found himself before the Chief Magistrate this morning charged with unlawfully exciting and attempting to excite racial hostility and ill will towards Police Constable Shawnette Bollers.

The Court was told that on the 20th March at Middle and Cummings Street, Georgetown, Nirvan Singh allegedly excited racial hostility towards Bollers in contravention of the Racial Hostility Act on the grounds of her race as an Afro Guyanese.

The Court was told that the Attorney allegedly directed several racist remarks to the woman who was at the time performing security duties at the home of his father, retired Acting Chancellor and Chief Justice Carl Singh. The Attorney pleaded not guilty to the charge.

After listening to the details of the charge, the Chief Magistrate granted bail in the sum of $100,000 and he will make his next Court appearance on the 18th May.

The Police Constable has already filed civil proceedings against the Attorney over the alleged incident.
