Aubrey Norton confirms his candidacy for PNC Leader

Former General Secretary and longstanding member of the People’s National Congress Aubrey Norton believes that he is equipped and ready to lead the party.

During an appearance on an online talk show “Politics 101” with Professor David Hinds, Mr. Norton confirmed that he will be running for the leadership of the party when the Congress is called.

“I believe I have the requisite skills to give leadership, I have said to people I believe that even while we serve in government I cannot be accused of corruption or anything of that kind and I believe that I am one among the viable candidates. The direct answer to that is once the congress of the People’s National Congress reform is called, I intend to run for the leadership of the party,” Mr. Norton announced.

According to the veteran politician, his intention is to serve his party and supporters more, adding that for him, leadership is not about one person but it is about a team. He said once he emerges as party leader, his intention is to build a team that will ensure the party is returned to government.

“What I can say is that the era of absolute leaders, maximum leaders that era is clearly gone and what we need is a new political culture in which leaders see themselves as first among equals and to shift and to move away from this culture of maximum leader…. who could you talk to when one man determines everything,” Mr. Norton pointed out.

Mr. Norton said there is a popular view that there needs to be new leadership at the helm of the APNU+AFC coalition. The PNC Reform is the largest party in the coalition.

“I think this process of democratization should bring a new type of leader that is disposed to listening to its base and acting in keeping with the ideas that emerge from the various approaches and discussions which are taken by all the political party within the coalition”.

Mr.Norton believes that the party needs a leader that is responsive, willing to compromise, and one who will find consensus.

The Chairperson of the PNC, Volda Lawrence is also expected to contest for the top party leadership position.

Several young party supporters have been on the ground talking to party supporters, but it is unclear whether those persons also intend to join the race.

While the incumbent leader, David Granger has not confirmed that he will be seeking another term as Party Leader, he recently restarted a television programme that focuses on his tenure as President and Party Leader and his thoughts on current national issues. Many of the party’s members have indicated publicly that they believe it is time for new leadership.
