Barbados' Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart, Senior Counsel Rex Mackay and Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Barton Scotland topped the list of national awardees.

Thousands of Guyanese flocked the Durban Park on Wednesday evening for Guyana’s 50th Independence fag raising ceremony.

At the event, the National Awards were announced.

Barbados’ Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart, Senior Counsel Rex Mackay and Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Barton Scotland topped the list of national awardees.

They have all been awarded with Guyana’s 2nd highest National Award, the Order of Roraima.

The Barbadian Prime Minister is being honoured for his contributions to CARICOM and his work with the development of small states. Mr. Stuart has also been strong in his support of Guyana’s territorial integrity.

Former Ambassador for Guyana, Ronald Austin and Business magnate, Inderjeet Beharry are among those named to receive the Cacique Crown of Honour.

President Granger has recommitted his government’s commitment to the development of a stronger Guyana. In an Address to the National Assembly, the President also recognized the work of all of Guyana’s past Presidents in the country’s development over the past 50 years.   He said there must be a cooperative effort to move the nation forward.
