Less than three weeks after longstanding PNCR member and Former Attorney General, Basil Williams accepted the nomination to contest for the position of Leader of the PNC and boasted of his more than 20 years of unbroken service to the party, he has pulled out of the contest.
In a statement early this morning, Williams said that from the onset of the contest he maintain that his participation in the party’s internal elections would be dependent on whether ‘circumstances’ would allow him to contest.
“I have examined all the circumstances and my team and I have decided that we will not engage in the contest at this time,” Williams said in the statement.
Williams, who is also a former Chairman of the PNC reminded noted that after nominations closed on November 12, he was informed by way of letter on November 17 that he was nominated for three positions including that of Leader and as well as other positions which will allow him to serve on the party’s Central Executive Committee, (CEC).
Williams has largely been campaigning only on social media, and since his nomination, he has not picked up endorsements from party groups except for the group in Sophia which nominated him.
With Williams now leaving the contest, the next PNC leader would either be former General Secretary of the party, Aubrey Norton, Opposition Leader, Joe Harmon, or Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, the three remaining contenders for the position of party leader.
The PNCR Congress which was slated for today is now billed for next Saturday after the CEC, acting on a recommendation from the Congress’ Chief Elections Officer, Vincent Alexander, recommended that the Congress be pushed back by one week due to logistical and other issues.
The party is set to elect a new Leader, Chairman, two Vice-Chairpersons, Treasurer, followed by the election of a new Central Executive Committee.
