Berbice duo remanded to jail for murder of overseas-based Guyanese man

The two persons who are suspected to have planned and carried out the robbery and murder of an elderly Guyanese man at his Canje home were charged and remanded to jail today.

The two accused, Melisha Dutchin and Mario Bissoondial, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court and were not required to enter a plea to the murder charge.

They are accused of killing Hemraj Pardessi at his East Canje home on the 3rd August. Magistrate Renita Singh remanded the pair to prison until the 9th September 2021 when the matter will continue.

The two did not say anything as they were ushered in and out of the Courtroom under Police guard.

Six persons were initially arrested as part of the investigations.

The 60-year-old man who returned to Guyana in July to begin the reconstruction of his home was found strangled to death on the evening of the 4th August. He was seen earlier the same day leaving a commercial bank.

The Police investigations led to the arrest of the woman first and then the other accused Mario Bissoondial was found hiding out in the backdam in the area.

A post-mortem examination revealed that in addition to the man being strangled to death, there were several other marks of violence on his body.

His entire house was also found ransacked with blood stains on the stairs.
