Berbice man admits to making online threats against Opposition Leader; Legal advice being sought

Police investigators were on Tuesday wrapping up their probe and preparing to seek legal advice on the alleged death threats made against Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jadgeo and other People’s Progressive Party members on Facebook.

The accused, Tameshwar Beekham, who allegedly made death threats to Jadgeo on Facebook could face criminal charges before the end of the week following his arrest on Monday.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told News Source that the police investigators are expected to send the file to the Director of Public Prosecution and the Police Legal Advisor for them to determine whether there was enough evidence for the matter to be taken before the Court.

Mr. Blanhum said Beekham, who is still in police custody, admitted to making the threats. He is the second person within the last two months to be arrested for making threats against Guyanese politicians on social media.

Beekham was arrested in Region Six and detained at the Springlands, Corentyne, Berbice.
Just like the East Bank Essequibo woman, Bibi Safoora Salim, who allegedly used her Facebook page to issue a death threat against President David Granger, Beekham can be fined and charged under the Racial Hostility Act.

With enough supporting evidence, he can be charged for attempting to excite racial hostility or ill will against the Opposition Leader. Beekham’s threats were also extended to other PPP members including PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee. His threats were investigated after the PPP made a report to the police.
