Better Hope man perishes in midday fire

A fire which occurred at about 12:30hrs today at lot 10 Bissoon Street, Better Hope South, East Coast Demerara (ECD) has left one person dead.

The deceased has been identified as 64-year Fazel Ally, an unemployed man who many described as an “alcoholic”.

Ally resided at the now demolished house with his common law wife 54-year old Anita Loaknauth, a vendor, and his 15-year old grandson Randy Ameer.

Reports indicate that the man’s wife and grandson went to work at about 4:30hrs on Sunday morning, leaving him alone in the house which was a single flat wooden structure measuring 10 ft. X 15 ft.

At about 12:30hrs, neighbours noticed the blaze and immediately called 911. Two fire tenders arrived shortly afterwards, but by that time, the structure had been completely destroyed.

The body of Ally was subsequently found under debris lying in the north to south position where the doorway initially was.

Neighbours also reported that the deceased was in the habit of threatening to burn his home down whenever he was under the influence of alcohol. It is unclear if he was intoxicated at the time of the fire.

However, fire prevention officer Andrew Holder explained to News Source that the origin of the fire was a stove which was left unattended to during cooking activity. Cooking instruments which were being used at the time were also found.
