Police investigators are probing the death of the 19-year-old University of Guyana student whose body was found Friday night at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, two days after he went missing.

The body washed up on the foreshore at Land of Canaan.

The young man, Harris Anthony Persaud, was last seen on Wednesday afternoon leaving the East Coast apartment of two of his university classmates.

The two friends were arrested and taken for questioning after they initially told investigators that Persaud had left their home alone. However, after neighbours recalled seeing all three young men boarding a car.

The friends then changed their story and told investigators that all went to the Kingston seawall for a swim when Persaud was swept away by a wave. They claimed that they panicked and took his clothes and belongings and dumped them along the East Coast.

Some of those belongings have not been recovered.

A post mortem examination is expected to be conducted within the next two days to determine the cause of death.  The findings of post mortem examination will decide the future of the investigation.

The 19-year-old was a civil engineering student who also did a part time job with a local engineering company. His parents became worried late on Wednesday night when they could not reach him after he did not return home.
