Bonus payments to Joint Services total $1.2 Billion

The one-month tax-free bonus that has been paid out to members of the Joint Services carries a cost of $1.2 Billion, according to the Ministry of Finance.

In a statement today, the Ministry of Finance said its staff members worked around the clock to ensure that the payments were made in a timely manner following the announcement of the bonus by President Irfaan Ali.

The Senior Finance Minister in the statement said the one-month bonus not only forms part of the Government’s “positive initiatives”, but also signifies the government’s “continuous care and concern for public servants who continue to work beyond the call of duty in specific major sectors”.

The government only paid out bonuses to members of the joint services and health care workers. Other public servants only received their retroactive salary increases.

The government believes that the bonus money will inject more activity into the local economy during the busy holiday shopping time.

The Guyana Public Service Union in a statement of its own said healthcare workers should have also been given one month’s tax-free salary as a bonus rather than just the two-week salary bonus that they received.

The union’s president has also said other public servants who have been working on the frontline should have also received the end of year bonus.
