Scores of bauxite workers attached to the Bosai Mining Company in Linden walked off the job today in protest of failing negotiations for salary increases.
“We on strike”, shouted the workers as they walked out of the mining areas.
The workers explained that every April, their union, NAACIE, and the company would negotiate salary increases. There was no agreement on the salary increase for this year and the two sides have been on a standstill ever since.
It was explained by one of the workers that the company wants to offer them a 6% salary increase this year and a 6.5% increase for the next two years.
The workers have turned down the offer and are pushing for a 7% increase for this year, with further negotiations for the next two years.
Union officials from Georgetown have traveled to Linden to meet with the company as the workers made it clear that they will only return to their jobs when the company gives in to their demands.
The striking workers are mostly from the Mines, Operations and Plant Maintenence Departments.
