Bosai workers go on strike over 3% increase

Scores of workers attached to the Bosai Bauxite company in Linden launched strike action on Monday to press the company to agree to a 10% increase in their wages and salaries.

The bauxite company is offering the workers 3.5%. The workers would enjoy salary increases every year and in 2012, they benefited from a 7% increase.

Bosai Public Relations Officer Vanessa Mitchell told News Source that “we are at the negotiation stage right now. The negotiations have just started but the workers want that to fast tracked. They are demanding a 10% increase while the company is making an initial offer of 3.5%.

She explained that if the strike action continues and affects all the shifts in the bauxite operations, work in the mines and operations and bauxite plant and operations could be severely affected.

Some of the workers protested outside the company’s Head Office on Monday calling for their demands to be met. Many of them walked off the job to join the protest and later left for home.

The workers are being represented by the trade union NAACIE which intends to continue the push to ensure their demands are met.
