BREAKING: Settlement of Guyana/Venezuela border controversy to go to International Court

The United Nations Secretary General has informed the Government of Guyana through the Guyana Ambassador to the United States that the UN has decided to refer the settlement of the Guyana/Venezuela border controversy to the International Court.

A number of senior government and diplomatic officials have confirmed the decision to News Source.

President David Granger is set to address the nation on the issue this afternoon.

Guyana has been pushing for a juridical settlement of the border controversy.

Guyana’s Ambassador to the United States was summoned to a meeting at the UN headquarters this morning to uplift the official message to the President of Guyana.

The move comes just days after senior Guyana Government officials quietly expressed some concern locally about not hearing anything from the United Nations in keeping with the Secretary General’s promise to announce a way forward at the end of December 2017.

President David Granger has said repeatedly that he believes the juridical settlement is the best way to go and is convinced that it will go in Guyana’s favour.

Venezuela had agreed in the Geneva Agreement of 1966, that the United Nations’ Secretary-General shall determine the means of settlement of this matter, including by judicial settlement.
