The British High Commission in Georgetown has announced that Prince Harry will visit Guyana later this year as the country continues to celebrate its 50th year of Independence from Great Britain.
In a statement on Monday morning, British High Commissioner to Guyana, Greg Quinn said “It gives me great pleasure to be able to confirm that Prince Harry will be visiting Guyana later this year. This will be the first visit by a member of the Royal Family since 2004 and comes, of course, in the year of Guyana’s 50th anniversary of Independence. It is therefore a particularly relevant time for such a visit.”
Prince Harry is the second son of heir to the British throne, Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana. He has visited other Caribbean nations in the past, but this will be his first visit to Guyana. The last member of the British monarchy to visit Guyana was Prince Harry’s uncle, Prince Andrew.
Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles visited Guyana in 2000 as part of a Caribbean tour. Queen Elisabeth last visited Guyana in 1994 as part of an official four day state visit.
Under the British Government and organisations affiliated to the Monarchy, Guyana has benefited from several development programmes over the years.
