British High Commissioner to Guyana, Gregg Quinn, is calling on the President and the Opposition Leader to think about what is best for the people of Guyana at this time. 

Mr. Quinn’s statement was shared on the Facebook page of the British High Commission.  

In the statement, he said the President and Opposition Leader as part of the political leadership, “need to start thinking what is best for the 750,000 people of this country”. He questioned “what will the two leaders do to solve the current situation in the country?”

The statement by the British High Commissioner came just one day after the new US Ambassador to Guyana said the US would encourage “genuinely free and fair elections” in Guyana.

President David Granger has written to the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, requesting information on GECOM’s readiness for early elections. 

The President in his letter asked to be provided with a work plan by the Elections Commission as well as to be informed of the Commission’s financial needs to ensure credible elections in the country.

The President has said that he does not plan to interfere or intervene in the work of the independent, Guyana Elections Commission. 

He has also repeatedly said that it is the Commission, which has to provide him with the guidance needed so that he could proclaim a date for the elections.

The Opposition Leader was pushing for elections to held during this month of March, but with that timeline being unrealistic, he has readjusted his deadline for elections before April 30.

GECOM has said the earliest date that elections could be held would be in the month of July.
