The Government will be increasing the “Because We Care” cash grant to schoolchildren to $25,000 which represents an increase of $10,000, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni announced today during his budget presentation.

In 2021, the government extended the cash grant to both private and public schools. It has made similar provisions in the 2022 budget.

“It would be recalled that this grant was unconscionably discontinued by the APNU/AFC. On returning to office, not only have we reintroduced it, but we now propose to increase it from $15,000 to $25,000 per child. This will place an additional amount of $2 billion in the homes of the same 200,150 children attending both public and private school,” the Finance Minister announced.

The Finance Minister said Government has historically placed the highest importance on supporting parents in ensuring their children attend school. One such measure that was introduced is the annual uniform grant given to the parents of each school age child. To this end, the Finance Minister announced an increase of $1,000 for the uniform voucher.

“I am pleased to announce that we will increase that grant this year from $4,000 to $5,000 per child. This will place $200 million of disposable income in the homes of 200,150 children attending both public and private school.

In 2014, the PPP/C Government launched the “Because We Care” project aimed at providing support to parents with school-age children. It was brought to an end the same year and the coalition government never reintroduced it.

The PPP returned to power in 2020 and brought the grant back in 2021.
