The Office of the Leader of the Opposition has seen its budgetary allocation for 2022 slashed significantly.
The Opposition Leader’s Office had made a request for $87 million for the day-to-day operations of the office but received $27.7M.
The constitutional office had also requested $48 million to buy new equipment for the office but it only received $5M.
Of the requested amount, a total sum of $27.7 million has been approved for the Office of the Leader of the Opposition with an additional $5M under Parliament office.
Last year the Opposition’s Leader Office was allocated $37 million in the budget which was also below its requested amount.
Opposition Chief Whip, Christopher Jones said the move by the government to slash the budget for the Opposition Leader’s office is to stymie it’s work.
He noted that the continuous significant slash in budget allocations for the Office of the Leader the Opposition by the government despite it being provided with a clear plan on the spending of the money, is part of the government’s plan to stymie the work of the Opposition Leader’s office.
“Year after year, an outline is provided as to how the monies are to be spent, and it is been cut”, Mr. Jones said.
Meanwhile, more than $1.85 billion has been approved for the Parliamentary Office for it to carry out its 2022 work programme.
