Businessmen in custody following altercation with Police

Police have detained two businessmen following an altercation which resulted in ranks allegedly being assaulted, property damaged, a loaded firearm being discharged and officers being obstructed from executing their duties.

A release from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) revealed that ranks were responding to a report of Simple Larceny in Kingston about 20:00hrs last evening, when they stopped an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) which was being driven without registration plates.

It is against the law to drive ATVs on roads in Guyana.

After police intercepted and was engaging the driver, three men then approached and obstructed the ranks from performing their duties. It is alleged that the men “behaved in a very hostile manner” towards the ranks who were forced to call for assistance.

The driver of the ATV then used that opportunity to drive away, while one of the two suspects now in custody allegedly assaulted a rank and “violently kicked and damaged” one of the rear lights of the Police vehicle. The other suspect, the Force said, allegedly pointed a gun at the ranks and subsequently discharged several rounds into the air before the two fled the scene in a motor car.

Shortly after, Police intercepted the vehicle with the two suspects and conducted a searched. The driver, who was found in possession of a .32 Pistol with five rounds, produced a license to carry the weapon.

However, he fled the scene in his vehicle while leaving the weapon with the police. His accomplice who was left at the scene was immediately detained, Police said. Two spent shells were found at the scene by investigators.

This morning, around 08:00hrs, the firearm holder turned himself in at the Brickdam Police Station.
