Just two days after the latest drug  bust at the Cheddi Jagan airport, the suspect in the case was placed before the courts and was slapped with jail time and a hefty fine.

25-year-old Hadrick Cummings of John Street Campbellville was sentenced to five years in jail and fined $40.5 Million after he pleaded guilty on Wednesday to drug trafficking.

The young man appeared calm as he stood before Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and entered the guilty plea. He was not represented in the matter but told the Magistrate that he is a businessman that operates an import and export company in John Street, Campbellville and wanted to “try a thing” by making an attempt to get the cocaine out in an effort to help his sick mother.

The Court was told that the over 30 pounds of cocaine that was found hidden in several ochroes carried a street value of over G$13 Million. The bust was made by the Police at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Monday as the shipment of vegetables were being prepared to be loaded onto a New York bound flight.

The 25-year-old was arrested at the airport. Other persons familiar with the investigations are of the view that the police should have probed the case even more since several investigators believe that the man may have had accomplices for the drug shipment.
