He came for a vacation, but must have loved the sweet chirping of the local birds. Now, a Canadian based Guyanese man has been convicted of bird smuggling and is finding out that a bird in the hand, could get you caged.

56-year-old Davendra Narine was arrested at the Cheddi Jagan Airport on March 2nd, after ten “towa towa” birds were found in his hand luggage, stuffed in hair curlers.

He was about to board a Toronto bound flight when agents followed the whistling sound. All of the birds were found alive.  Narine was fined $140,000 for the bird smuggling conviction.

Appearing sad in court on Tuesday, the man told the court that he has no children and is a lover of birds and would raise birds to keep his company.

That excuse was not enough to convince the Magistrate against handing down the sentence.

The towa-towa birds are well known internationally for their whistling and many times they are smuggled to participate in gambling and other competitions.

This is not the first time that someone has been caught trying to smuggle the birds through the airport.
