A 53-year-old Canadian man was sentenced to four years in jail today after he pleaded guilty to a cocaine trafficking charge.
The man, Miguel Andres Sardinha was busted at the Cheddi Jagan Airport Thursday evening as he prepared to board a direct flight to Toronto, Canada.
According to reports, agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit found 25 pounds of cocaine in frozen chinese fried rice and powdered milk tins that the Canadian national had in his suitcases.
This is believed to be the first time that the authorities have found cocaine in frozen chinese food which is usually requested by Guyanese who live overseas.
Investigators believe the man came to Guyana specifically to ferry the cocaine out. When he appeared in court, he did not bother to waste the court time and pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted his four year sentence.
The fried rice bust came on the same day that Canadian authorities announced the break up of a major drug trafficking and gun running ring that stretched from the United States and Canada to Guyana and the Caribbean.
Guyanese entertainment deejay Dwidth Ferguson is wanted in Canada in connection with that case. Twelve Canadian nationals have so far been charged in the case.
