Canadian High Commissioner offers no comment on Charrandass Persaud’s exit and High Commission’s role

One day after the Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana Lillian Chatterjee was summoned to a meeting by the Foreign Affairs Minister, she said she would have no comment to offer to the media on the Charrandass Persaud exit issue.

The Canadian High Commission’s Security Officer, Richard Beliveau, accompanied the former Member of Parliament to the Eugene F. Correia Airport on the morning after his no-confidence vote.

The Canadian Government Official has reportedly claimed that the High Commission was contacted by Persaud as a Canadian Citizen, to facilitate a safe exit from the country for him.

There is some concern that a breach in security took place at the Airport when the Canadian High Commission official and PPP Advisor Peter Ramsaroop, were both able to obtain protocol passes to accompany Persaud to the stairs of the LIAT aircraft.

The Canadian official and Ramsaroop have since claimed that they were there separately, however, security officials said Ramsaroop made it clear to them that he was in the company of the Canadian official and that was how he was able to access the pass that allows airside access.

Questioned by the media today about the assistance rendered to Mr. Persaud by the High Commission, the High Commissioner said Canada does not discuss consul services related to its citizens with the media.

She also refused to answer questions about the meeting with the Foreign Minister.

The Foreign Minister, Carl Greenidge, has also offered not to comment on the meeting. News Source understands that the Government believes there was a breach of protocol and security with the way the situation was handled by the Canadian Government official.

Guyana and Canada have been sharing diplomatic relations for over 50 years.
