Canal #1 woman and son busted with cocaine at CJIA

A 50-year-old Canal #1, West Bank Demerara woman and her 20-year-old son were taken into Police custody on Tuesday afternoon after they were busted at the Cheddi Jagan airport with a large quantity of cocaine in the false bottom of four of their suitcases. The bust unearthed just over 22 pounds of cocaine in the suitcases.

The mother and son were outgoing passengers on a Canada bound, Caribbean Airlines flight when officers of the Police Narcotics Division found the illegal substance stashed in the false bottom of their suitcases.

The 20-year-old son is believed to be a Canadian citizen. Police sources told News Source that the two were being grilled about the cocaine that was found in their suitcases and their possible links to drug pushers in Guyana.

Just last Friday, the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit and the Police Narcotics Branch busted two U.S bound passengers with cocaine in milk tins and milk packets. The two were getting ready to board two different flights to New York. They have both been charged for drug trafficking.

And on Monday, the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit carried out a search of a Diamond house and found 2700 pounds of Jamaican marijuana. A search was conducted at another house in the same area and 10 pounds of cocaine and $1 Million in cash were found. Three persons are in custody in connection with those busts.

Both the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit and the Police Narcotics Branch have beens stepping up their monitoring of outgoing passengers at the Cheddi Jagan airport. Their efforts have resulted in a number of drug busts in recent months.
